Management and Negotiating Conflict Style Essay
1. Hastings had a reputation of being hard headed, and not being able to take criticism. He used the autocratic style to push for his ways of doing things. They said he would sometimes embarrass employees, and roll his eyes at them. And when they had an idea he might call their ideas ââ¬Å"dumb ideasâ⬠. He was so bad at this he actually established the nickname ââ¬Å"Animalâ⬠. Hastings was young when he developed Pure Software, after establishing it he realized he didnââ¬â¢t like the man he had become or the business he had created. He sold Pure for $750 million and changed his ways when he moved on to his new company Netflix. At Netflix Hastings was a new man; he changed his use of communications in sending and receiving messages in many ways. At Netflix, Hastings was much more kind and open to new ideas. He changed his way of talking to employees and you can tell by the rise in stock and Hastings being named Businessperson of the year in 2010. 2. He changed his use of feedback by listening to his employees and thier ideas, and when he didnââ¬â¢t understand he would say, ââ¬Å" help me understand your idea, tell me why this will work.â⬠Instead of just rolling his eyes and acting high and mighty like he did and his previous company Pure. 3. Hastings coaching style at Pure was poor; he wanted to change that when he created Netflix. He defiantly improved his coaching guidelines in the following ways; He started giving praise and recognition, not criticizing, and giving specific and descriptive feedback. 4. I feel Hastings used two different styles one at Pure and one at Netflix. I feel the style he used at Pure was more of a Forcing Conflict style. When I read the case I got the impression that Hastings didnââ¬â¢t care what his Pure employees thought about him it was more of a I win you Lose attitude which is what the Forcing Conflict Style is all about. With Netflix on the other hand I feel like he went for more of the Negotiating Conflict Style the more I win some, you win some. He cared more about his employees and how they felt. That is just my opinion but I guess if I had to pick just one style he used in both of them I would pick the Forcing Conflict Style because Hastings still ran a tight ship and at the end of the day he was always going to end up a winner. 5. The Conflictà management style used by Netflix was Collaborating Conflict Style. It is the best solution agreeable to all parties. Joining forces with Epix was a good deal for both of them. Thatââ¬â¢s why I feel the Collaborating Approach was the style used. 6. I am currently a Netflix user; I have been for many years. They are getting better and better every year. I really have no complaints, they have every show that I like to watch, and it is always very quick for me. I think the price is fair, and they let you watch it on every device you own. I as a customer have absolutely no complaints. 7. I think the Group Level of Analysis was used. This level focuses on the relationship between the leaders and the collective group of followers. They focus on how a leader contributes to group effectiveness. Hastings used the Management paradigm by being concerned with stability, and finding out the best way to get the job done. He was able to lead through others, and create favorable conditions for success. He was a very successful leader too; there is no good manager that is not a good leader as well.

There are a few poems in particular that touch upon the subject of family relationships and especially Harrisons view on family. The poems are Book Ends I and II, A Good Read and Bringing up. In all the poems the writer is expressing how he felt about his family, his relationship with his father and mother and how his mother has affected the family when she was alive and after she has died. The poems Book Ends I and II both are about how the relationship between Harrison and his father changed after his mother died. From the title of the poems the reader can gather the metaphor of the father and the son being the book ends You are like book ends, the pair of you. Although from the poem we find out that the two of them are quite different, they are also quite similar because the book ends also come in a pair. The metaphor can be developed by saying that the pages of the book are the mother because that is the only thing that holds the book ends together. The poem also illustrates the sadness of both the son and the father because of the mothers death we chew it slowly. Apart form saddens this line shows the reader that they are savouring the memory of their beloved mother and wife. In the next line the writer is saying how scared of bed he is because they are afraid of the thought that their mother has died. Harrison emphases on their difference by saying We never could talk much, and now dont try because talking establishes the real difference between them although they are a son and father. The more and more the reader and realises the main theme of the poem that Harrison has established, the more the poem starts to develop as a sort of a piece of writing expressing how bad his relationship with his father is A night you need my company to pass. At this moment the father needs his son because he is sad and even though the writer is quite sceptical towards his relationship with his father, Harrison needs his father because his grief is not less. Harrison says that his fathers life is all shattered into smithereens, but here is hiding what his actual feelings are and in a way attacks his father. The final lines of the poem suggest and show the reader that the difference between them is so quite major because of education whats still betweens not the thirty years or so years, but books, books, books. Harrison wants to be close to his father but he must give up his education and social level so that he can keep a close relationship. The second Book Ends poem continues to give the reader more and more information about the relationship between Harrison and his father. The poem starts of with Harrison deciding what to write on his mothers stone The stones too fullTheres scarcely room to carve. Form here the reader finds out that there has been to much written on the gravestone and there isnt even enough space to write her name. Harrison ahs a lot to write to his on his mothers gravestone, but the father doesnt seem to care too much Come on its not as if were wanting verse. Its not as if we are wanting a whole sonnet!. Here the father is also mocking the sons education, by saying that he doesnt know to actually write. The next line of the poem shows the reader that they are still depressed because of the mothers death After tumblers of neat Johnny Walker. This also shows that they still cant cope without the mother. The fathers appalling education results as a barrier between them as Harrison is this time mocking his father you said youd always been a clumsy talker and couldnt find another, shorter word for beloved or for wife. Although his father is not as intelligent as Harrison is he Is still able to be cutting his son when the writer is looking for words to put on his mothers gravestone not too clumsy that you cant still cut. Again in the next two lines where the father is speaking, he is mocking his sons education by saying that it only exists on paper bright boy at description and the swear words that the father uses what the fuck to put shows again his lack of vocabulary due to poor education and also his frustration with his son. The fathers lower social class status is shown once more in the poem Ive got the envelope that hed been scrawling. The fact that his father has written the words that are supposed to go on to the mothers gravestone on an envelope, shows in a way the respect he has for her and again his poor education is emphasised mawkish, stylistically appalling. The next poem that I am going to discuss is called A Good Read and it is again about the relationship between Harrison and his father. The poem starts of with Harrison describing what he has had to read that particular summer That summer it was Ibsen, Marx and Gide. This is quite symbolic because Ibsen wrote depressing poems about bad family relationships and Marx is the so called father of communism. The fact that the father is saying ah sometimes you read too many books. ah nivver ad much time for a good read at the same time the father wonders how can his son find books so amusing and again this show the difference in their social class, but it also shows that the father was working all the time so that his son can have a good education and thats why he didnt read a lot. In the part of the poem which is written in italics is where Harrison expresses his frustration with his father and he also patronises him Good read! I bet! Your programme at United. Harrison mentions sarcastically that his father even reads the labels on his drinks and that shows that his father has started to drink a lot which leads to the fact that he cant cope with the loss of Harrisons mother. At the end of the part in italics Harrison shows a similarity with his father by swearing fucking football. This shows that even though there is a lot of tension In their relationship they are still a father and son. Also Harrison cant actually say all those things to his father (All this in my mind.) The father of Harrison actually becomes the good read as he becomes the subject of some of his poems which is quite ironic and writing becomes the only thing that makes his father interesting to Harrison. The last poem that I will discuss is called Bringing up and it tells Harrisons readers and audience about his relationship with his mother, but more precisely what his mother used to think of his writing and how did she accept it. As it can be gathered form the title it is the time when his mother was still alive and when Harrison was younger and at the beginning of his poetic years. The poem starts of with his mother being in disgust with what Harrison has produced and the fact that she has borrowed a library copy shows even more that his mother didnt approve of her sons writing at all. Alliteration is used for emphasis on that how much she dislikes his poetry wept for weeks.

How to Write For a Global Audience [16 unexpected examples] As businesses become more international, so must our writing. Most of the time, good business writing skills transfer very well to global audiences, but there are some things that you want to keep in mind aboutintercultural relations. Lots of research has been done on this topic, so Iââ¬â¢ll include links for further reading. I am hesitant to add in examples because they may not be true even five years from now - I have seen so much change in the time that I have been teaching! With that said, I will add in some examples to make these concepts clearer. Do your research on honorifics and attitudes towards hierarchy The way that we show respect to our superiors and our coworkers varies dramatically across cultures. From the outside, the U.S. looks like it has a fairly casual and egalitarian work structure. For example: We are comfortable working on teams and in groups with people older and younger than us, and with more and less seniority. We tend to address people the same way throughout an organization. We would say, ââ¬Å"Good morning, John!â⬠to the boss and to the janitor. Eye contact is a sign that we are paying attention to someone, i.e. that we respect them enough to listen to them. You may be interested in our English Business Writing Course for non-native writers (ESL). This is not the case in many other cultures/countries. In some places, hierarchy, class, status, and rank are very important, and they require you to act and speak very differently depending on the content. For example: Japanese culture is a good example of this. The language itself requires different grammatical structures, and sometimes completely different words, depending on the hierarchical relationship between the speaker(s) and the listener(s). These grammatical differences reflect the cultural attitudes towards hierarchy and status. Indian culture is similarly stratified. It is often inappropriate for a lower level worker to speak or work with more senior employees. This could avoid a lot of problematic misconceptions about your team mates and how they are responding to you! Be flexible in how you think about time management Ideas about time are tied to culture. It could be the culture of your particular workplace, or the culture of the larger society, but how we think about time varies dramatically. Some places value how many hours you work, while others value how much work you complete in those hours, and still others are a mix of the two. Some places value making decisions quickly, while others put much more time into making a decision. Some places see due dates and start times as if they are absolute, while others see them as if they are flexible suggestions. These are often cultural differences, but they can vary widely across work places. (I work in higher ed, and the decision making process is painfully slow compared with the private sector places I worked before!) Itââ¬â¢s important to remember that a missed deadline may not be due to laziness, but a difference of opinions about what deadlines actually mean. If you find yourself getting frustrated with your global team, take a deep breath and do some research on time management and decision making. Use the key words above, as well as attitudes about time, + country name. Doing this before a meeting or project begins can prevent a lot of frustration. Honor ideas about change Depending on where you work, ideas about change can vary widely, even within the U.S. For example: Some cultures or workplaces value innovation and new ideas. This attitude is common in the U.S. Other places value and respect tradition and the time-tested ways of doing things. This attitude is more commonly found in places with more hierarchical societies. Clearly, a group with different ideas about change will have difficulty finding a suitable solution! Finding a middle ground that values the traditional approach while allowing for innovation is tricky, but invaluable when working with global teams. This could be as simple as acknowledging that the current innovation wouldnââ¬â¢t be possible without the groundwork laid by the traditional approach. Write simply, but powerfully We'vewritten several other blog posts onhow to improve your business writing skills, but the overall message is this: Write simply and directly. Do not use colloquialisms, idioms, highly technical language, or complicated grammatical structures. Use lists and headings to help break up content and make it easy for the reader to know what to do. (like I am doing here!) Do not rely on implicit messages, or something mentioned in a meeting or previous email. Say everything you need to say clearly, directly, and in language that someone outside of your field could understand. A combination of straightforward written communications and consideration for cultural differences will greatly improve your business communications, increase effectiveness, and save time.
